About James Nelson

Philosophy

There are several philosophies that influence my work including relational, cognitive behavioral, and motivational interviewing.  I believe that the therapeutic relationship is the most important aspect to creating change.  I work with a persons strengths, developing skills and awareness to improve outcomes and help the individual meet their personal goals.  Our work together would address physical, cognitive, behavioral, and emotional aspects.  When appropriate, hypnosis and EMDR techniques are available.

Experience

I have been licensed as a Clinical Mental Health Counselor in Vermont since 1989, and a Licensed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor in 2011.   I have years of experience working with adolescence and adults around a variety of issues.  My current work is in private practice but I have worked in mental health agencies and school settings as well.
